My Story
Malik Whitaker is a highly accomplished artist, educator, graphic designer, and illustrator
from Newark, NJ, whose career began at age ten with statewide wins, leading to his full-
time artistic profession. He is celebrated for his published works, including illustrations in
several publications and murals across New Jersey. Malik specializes in contemporary
portrait and figurative painting, skillfully employing diverse mediums. His current focus on
pointillism powerfully interprets African-American narratives, both past and present, while
also serving as a vital, meditative outlet.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Malik was the interim director of City Without Walls Gallery
(CWOW) and is the owner and director of Cement Gallery. As the owner of M-Print Art
Studios in Newark, he not only showcases his artwork but also mentors students with
disabilities through the Pickled Arts Center. Additionally, he serves as a teaching artist for
esteemed organizations including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Studio
Institute of New York, and Studio Montclair, contributing to the development of the next
generation of artists.
With extensive experience in directing galleries, creating public projects, and securing
grants, Malik has participated in over 100 nationwide exhibitions, including five residencies
such as the Uncool Artist residency in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He continues to seek
greater exposure for his art, which testifies to resilience, heritage, and the power of
storytelling.
